What Customers Say About Philips Compact Size DVD Player - Sliver (DVP1013):

I am very happy with this compact DVD player. It's a little slow loading up before you watch a video, but other than that it is perfect. And on top of that, if it breaks no biggie because the machine is cheap. Can't beat it.

it gets the job done. Once it dies a natural death, I will likely purchase the same model once again.

Six months ago, I purchased the Philips dvp1013 and have been using it heavily for dvd's from regions 1, 2, and 4. The playback is still as adequate today as it was when I purchased the appliance.

I had grown tired of watching my European and Australian dvd's on my computer and searched for an inexpensive player that could be re-programmed to be region-free. Given they cost 3-4 times more then this Pilips, I think I have gotten my money's worth during the six months I have owned it.

It does have some annoying quirks (lack of a clock and the fact that the player cannot be paused long enough to make a cup of tea without it going into a save mode, would be the top two grievances), but nothing with which I cannot deal, especially taking into consideration the fabulously low price. PROS: -compact (about half the width of a "regular dvd player, though a bit thicker)-VERY easy to reprogram into "region-free"; just google for directions; -cheap (the cost of two new DVD releases; you can't beat that).CONS: -if the player is in energy save mode and you want to eject the dvd, you have to turn the power on first and wait a few seconds before pushing the eject button (on more complex models the power goes on as you press the eject button)-if you pause for more then a few minutes, the player goes into a power save mode and you loose the spot on the dvd; you have to go thru the headache of starting up the disk all over;-there is no clock, you never know precisely where you are on the disk;-the fast forward button and skip button are the same; if your finger twitches as you are fast forwarding you will skip instead; very annoying.-if you want top notch picture and sound, this player is NOT for you (though the player did meet my moderate expectations); My SONY dvd players typically lasted about 12-18 months.

Yes it is borax and is unlikely to satisfy the gadget freak in you, but.

That can be annoying, as I have to make sure to pop in and unpause/repause so it doesn't completely shut off. I mostly watch DVD+Rs I recorded myself on this dvd player, but also regular dvd movies now and then. But for the price, that is a small minor annoyance that I can live with.Nice remote with good size buttons that glow in the dark. I've gone thru a handful of these low priced dvd players from a couple different brands, this one has worked the best and lastest the longest of them all with no malfunctions.I've been using it for at least 2 years on a regular basis and I like it. Only real downfall for me is that if you pause, after a few minutes it will show you the bouncing DVD icon(and still go back to where you left off), but after I'd say another 15 minutes, the machine does turn off and lose your spot in the movie. Small and compact machine, great for tight spaces. All in all, I'd buy this again.

We read all the other reviews before we bought this and thought, surely those bad reviews are just random lemons and silly reasons. I don't care what another reviewer said. Well we know first hand it is not a good player. If you ever use it for anything other than cheap, store bought dvds IT WILL NOT WORK. It DOES NOT handle DVD-Rs. And if you want to assume that ours is another "random lemon" story, then I hate to say it, but, "I told you so."

Worked about five times. This is the second DVD player I have owned. It won't play dvds and makes a buzzing sound. The first one worked for about a year, if that. Second one was this Phillips model. I would not recommend this model. Guess I just don't have good luck with dvd players.
